Most households in the rural Kumaon region, where Kumaun Grameen Udyog (KGY) is located, are economically dependent on rain-fed agriculture. Agricultural productivity is below national average due to poor soil health and scattered fields. Over the last few years, there have well-documented changes in rainfall patterns. This in turn has lead to increased variability in income. Migration of able-bodied youth in search of employment is common and leading to fragmentation of the traditional family units. Within the region there exist limited opportunities, outside the agricultural sector, for young girls and women.
KGU is a section 25 company set up to help provide sustainable livelihoods to artisans and farmers in rural Kumaun in Uttarakhand. To this end, KGU supports a variety of income generation programmes and all profits made are used to promote rural development programmes (namely, a primary school and hospital in District Nainital).
